A former physician has launched Robyn, an empathetic AI companion

What Happened

Robyn wants to position itself as an empathetic chatbot and not as a companion or a therapy app.

Our Take

Another chatbot trying to be your friend without admitting it. The "not therapy, not companion" positioning is just liability hedging—call it what you want, people will use it like therapy anyway.

Look, empathetic AI means better prompting. It's fine for venting into the void, useless for actual mental health. The doctor background is credibility theater; doesn't change that it's an LLM with a friendly system prompt.

If it works, users don't care about the positioning. If it doesn't, the positioning won't save it.

What To Do

Wait six months to see churn rates—that's the real signal of whether people actually found it useful.
