‘Toy Story 5’ takes aim at creepy AI toys: ‘I’m always listening’
What Happened
Addictive, AI-enabled tablets are taking over, and also, Woody is balding in the new Toy Story movie, out June 19.
Our Take
Disney's making a horror film about what we've already shipped to every kid's bedroom. That's not critique—that's just mirror-holding. AI tablets that "always listen" feel creepy because they *are* creepy, and we normalized them anyway.
The movie works because parents are already anxious. But nothing changes. Kids still get the devices, parents still complain, we all move on. Art doesn't kill business.
Expect the cycle: problem gets real, movie warns us, problem persists anyway, repeat with next tech. We're really good at shipping first and feeling bad later.
What To Do
Don't build "always-on" consumer AI products aimed at kids—the PR cost and regulatory risk are headed up, fast.
